       I always wondered
immediate environment of the solar system. So we know that the nearest star to the Sun - Proxima Centauri. And a little further than it is Alpha Centauri. Then there is still Barnard's Star, Luman 16, Wolf 359, Lalande 21185 and so on. But what, for example, the distance between Alpha Centauri and Lalande 21185? That is closer to Sirius - Barnard's Star, or the Sun? If I wanted to know the distance between London and Paris, I could open the map and measure ruler and determine the real size, a landmark on the scale.
But is there such a map for the surrounding area of the Sun? Such that would not cover the next 10 light-years, and, at least, 25 or 40. And that there would be not only bright stars, but also red and brown dwarfs. Yes, and that the card was simple and clear as possible. I found a lot of good cards. But none of them did not satisfy me completely. And then I decided to make myself a card. Three-dimensional space, so any two-dimensional image of it - just a projection. Therefore, more important than the location of the stars on the map - their Cartesian coordinates. With three coorinates for each star, we can easily determine the distance between any two stars. As a result, I decided to make a map as a projection of stars in the plane perpendicular to the direction of the Polaris. And provide each star coordinates. The x-axis is directed along the direction of the vernal equinox in the constellation of Pisces. I would like to map the next 50 light-years. Then I realized that it is not one, but eight cards and decided to start with, create a map of the next 25 light-years.
In the end we got here this map.
The map shows the 256 star systems, including 360 stars and 44 known planets, including the 8 planets of the Solar System. 231 or 64% of the total - is "boring" red dwarfs, even 58 or 16% - "brown dwarfs". Yellow dwarf same, including our Sun - only 21 or 5.8% of the total number of stars.
Each of the stars on the map in modern astronomy has some notation. I tried to choose among them simpler and more familiar.
Card Size - 2800x2800 pixels.
